The B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) is warning that changing weather conditions could significantly increase wildfire activity across British Columbia in the coming days.

An approaching cold front is expected to bring strong winds and possible lightning, creating conditions that may ignite new wildfires while causing existing fires to spread more rapidly.

Aydan Coray, a fire information officer with the Provincial Wildfire Coordination Centre, said firefighters are preparing for more difficult conditions over the weekend.

“The existing fires on the landscape this weekend are going to experience more challenging conditions,” Coray said.

He added that any new fires caused by lightning or other storm-related activity are likely to grow quickly due to the combination of dry vegetation and gusty winds.

The warning comes as wildfire crews continue battling numerous active fires across British Columbia, where prolonged dry weather has left many areas at an elevated risk of fire.

Officials are urging residents to remain alert, monitor wildfire updates, and follow any evacuation orders or emergency instructions issued by local authorities.

The BCWS will continue monitoring weather conditions closely as firefighting crews work to contain existing blazes and respond to any new fire starts.
