US President Donald Trump criticized sections of the media during the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner while also praising journalists and honoring award recipients.

The event, which celebrates press freedom, was held after the original dinner was canceled following a shooting three months earlier.

During his speech, Trump joked that “the second time is always better” and said he respected “most” members of the media.

However, his remarks later turned critical as he accused some news organizations of spreading “fake news” and claimed many journalists suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

The president attended the event alongside reporters from media organizations he has frequently criticized or taken legal action against, including The New York Times, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal.

WHCA President Weijia Jiang of CBS News said next year’s dinner would return to the Washington Hilton, where the original event had been scheduled before the shooting.

She said the association would not allow the act of violence to define the tradition and paid tribute to those affected by the incident.

Trump also presented an award to US Secret Service officer Victor Gonzalez for his bravery during the shooting, recognizing his actions in protecting others during the attack.
