Thailand’s prime minister has promised to introduce stricter gun control laws following a shooting near Bangkok that left eight people dead and 22 others injured.

The attack was carried out by a 14-year-old teenager on the outskirts of the Thai capital.

Teenager Kills Family Members and Teachers

According to authorities, the teenager first killed his grandparents at the home they shared before travelling to Debsirin School in Nonthaburi, where he was a student.

At the school, he killed five teachers before taking his own life.

Thai media later reported that a student had also died from injuries sustained during the attack, bringing the reported death toll to eight.

The shooting has renewed concerns about gun access and firearm regulations in Thailand, particularly following the involvement of a young person in the attack.

Thailand Plans Tougher Gun Restrictions

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the government intends to introduce new legislation restricting the carrying of firearms in public.

Under the proposed rules, carrying guns in public would be limited to government officials who are on duty.

The prime minister said the measures were necessary to strengthen public safety and reduce the risk of similar attacks.

The government is now expected to work on the proposed legislation as officials assess existing firearm regulations and how they can be strengthened.

The deadly shooting has prompted renewed debate in Thailand over gun ownership, public safety and the need for tighter controls on firearms.
