Rescuers in Ukraine worked through the night searching for survivors in the wreckage of a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih after a deadly Russian drone strike killed 16 people and injured 130 others.

Local officials said nine people were still missing following Friday’s attack in the busy shopping centre in the Dnipropetrovsk region. At least 23 children were among those injured, while 29 people were reportedly in serious condition.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as “cynical and despicable,” saying the shopping centre was struck in two waves. He said the second strike targeted emergency workers who had arrived at the scene following the initial attack.

Dramatic footage verified by the BBC showed a second drone hitting the shopping centre while it was already on fire. Russia’s military has not commented on the reported attack.

The death toll reached 16 after rescuers recovered another body from the rubble overnight. Officials warned that the number of casualties could rise as rescue teams continue searching the damaged building.

Further Russian strikes were also reported early Saturday, with local officials saying at least two more people were killed. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted transport infrastructure and warehouses.
