A global PlayStation Network outage that prevented thousands of gamers from accessing digital games and online features has been resolved.

The disruption affected users worldwide on Friday, with outage tracking website Down Detector reporting tens of thousands of complaints about problems with the service.

Affected players reported difficulties launching digital games, apps, and online network features on their PlayStation consoles.

The outage also sparked renewed criticism from some gamers over Sony’s plans to move toward a more digital-focused future. Some users expressed concerns about the company’s announcement that new PlayStation games will no longer be released on physical discs from January 2028.

One user on X questioned the shift, saying they could still play games using physical discs during the outage while digital titles were unavailable.

Sony previously said that new games would still be available in stores, but physical purchases would include a digital code rather than a traditional game disc.

By Friday evening, Sony’s official status page confirmed that PlayStation Network services had returned to normal.

The outage occurred around the same time as issues reported by Amazon Web Services, although those server problems were later resolved.

Sony has not yet provided detailed information about the cause of the PlayStation Network disruption.
