A major painting by Philip Guston emerged as the top-selling work from the Zabludowicz Collection during Christie’s Postwar and Contemporary Art sale in London, helping the collection generate more than $34 million in total sales.

Guston’s Mirror Head (1977) sold for just under £4 million ($5.2 million) after entering the auction with a low estimate of £3.5 million ($4.6 million). The artwork alone accounted for roughly one-third of the auction’s overall value, making it the standout lot of the sale.

The second-highest result came from Mark Bradford’s large-scale mixed-media collage, Farther South and Elsewhere (2015). The nearly 11-foot-wide work achieved £1.3 million ($1.7 million), selling within its pre-sale estimate.

Another notable sale was Rashid Johnson’s Untitled Broken Crowd (2021), a 10-foot-wide painting that realized £952,500 ($1.3 million), also meeting expectations.

Meanwhile, Richard Prince’s Untitled (Cowboy) (1994) exceeded its pre-sale estimate, selling for £1.6 million ($2.1 million) and becoming one of the auction’s strongest performers.

Despite the impressive overall result, no other works from the Zabludowicz Collection surpassed the £1 million mark.

The Zabludowicz family has long been recognized among the world’s leading contemporary art collectors, appearing on the ARTnews Top 200 Collectors list every year since 2005. Their collection includes works by many of the most influential postwar and contemporary artists, making it a significant fixture in the international art market.

The successful Christie’s auction highlights continued demand for blue-chip contemporary art, particularly works by established names such as Philip Guston, Mark Bradford, Richard Prince, and Rashid Johnson, even amid evolving market conditions.
