OpenAI has said it plans to work constructively with state attorneys general following reports that a coalition of state regulators has launched an investigation into the artificial intelligence company.
According to reports, OpenAI received a subpoena requesting information related to several aspects of its business operations, including advertising practices, consumer and health data handling, protections for minors and senior users, and the development and deployment of its AI models.
In response, an OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company takes such concerns seriously and intends to cooperate with regulators throughout the process.
“AI is a new and powerful technology, and we work every day to safely bring its benefits to people in a responsible way,” the spokesperson said.
The reported investigation comes as OpenAI continues its rapid growth and increasing influence in the global technology sector. The company gained worldwide attention following the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, helping to accelerate the adoption of generative artificial intelligence across industries.
Since then, ChatGPT has grown into one of the world’s most widely used AI platforms, reportedly serving more than one billion monthly active users. The company’s products are now used for education, business, software development, research, and content creation.
OpenAI’s expansion has also attracted growing regulatory scrutiny. Governments and regulators around the world have been examining how AI companies collect data, protect user privacy, address misinformation risks, and ensure the safety of increasingly powerful AI systems.
The investigation arrives at a critical time for OpenAI as the company prepares for a potential public stock market debut. Earlier this week, OpenAI announced that it had confidentially filed registration documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a significant step toward a future initial public offering (IPO).
OpenAI has become one of the world’s most valuable private technology companies, reaching an estimated valuation of approximately $850 billion earlier this year. Its rapid rise has positioned it at the center of the global AI race, alongside other major technology firms investing heavily in artificial intelligence.
While the outcome of the investigation remains unclear, OpenAI’s statement suggests the company intends to maintain a cooperative approach as regulators seek more information about its operations and AI development practices.
The case highlights the increasing attention governments are paying to artificial intelligence companies as the technology becomes more deeply integrated into everyday life and the global economy.
