US President Donald Trump met with senior advisers at the White House on Friday to discuss a proposed framework aimed at extending a ceasefire with Iran, but the meeting ended without any clear announcement on the next steps.

The high-level discussions took place in the White House Situation Room, a facility typically used during major national security and international crises. According to US officials, the meeting focused on evaluating a memorandum of understanding that could extend the current ceasefire between the United States and Iran for an additional 60 days.

Trump reiterated that any agreement with Tehran must meet several key conditions. He stated that Iran must permanently abandon any effort to develop nuclear weapons, ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open to unrestricted commercial shipping in both directions, and remove or destroy any naval mines that could threaten maritime traffic.

The proposed framework was reportedly agreed upon in principle by both sides on Thursday, pending approval from Trump and Iran’s leadership. If accepted, the arrangement would extend the ceasefire and open negotiations regarding the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.

A White House official told CBS News that the president would only support an agreement that aligns with US national security interests and guarantees that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Iranian officials have publicly stated that they are not currently negotiating over their nuclear programme. The comments highlight the continuing gap between the positions of Washington and Tehran.

Since the ceasefire came into effect on 8 April, Trump has repeatedly expressed optimism about reaching a broader agreement with Iran. However, substantive progress has remained limited, and no final breakthrough has been announced.

Earlier on Friday, Trump also suggested he was prepared to lift the US blockade affecting the Strait of Hormuz. In a social media post, he said vessels stranded in the strategic waterway could begin the process of returning home if conditions allowed.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, carrying a significant portion of global oil and energy supplies. Any agreement affecting the waterway is expected to have major implications for regional stability and international trade.

With both sides yet to approve the proposed framework, uncertainty remains over whether the ceasefire extension and future nuclear talks will move forward.
