Lionel Messi returned to competitive football on Saturday for Inter Miami, making his first appearance since Argentina’s World Cup final defeat by Spain.

The 39-year-old forward came off the bench in the 53rd minute during Miami’s 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew, receiving a huge welcome from home supporters.

Messi had not played competitively since captaining Argentina in their 1-0 defeat on 19 July. During the World Cup, he delivered a standout performance, scoring eight goals and providing four assists.

Although Messi did not find the net against Columbus, he had opportunities to score after entering the match and narrowly missed two chances.

Inter Miami opened the scoring through Luis Suárez, who produced an impressive long-range chipped effort to score his seventh goal in four matches.

Columbus responded when Miami midfielder Casemiro accidentally scored an own goal while attempting to clear the ball, bringing the visitors level.

Miami regained the lead through Noah Allen, who headed home to make it 2-1.

However, Columbus Crew secured a point when debutant Brais Mendez curled in a stunning free-kick in the 84th minute to complete the 2-2 draw.

Messi’s return will be welcomed by Inter Miami fans as the club enters the next stage of its season following his successful World Cup campaign.
