Indian activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has been forcibly taken to hospital after spending 20 days on hunger strike in Delhi.

The 59-year-old activist had been protesting in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), an online satirical movement calling for educational reforms.

Protesters had planned to march to India’s Parliament on Monday. Wangchuk had been surviving on only salt and water during his hunger strike and had reportedly lost more than 9kg.

The activist was said to be experiencing significant pain before police and paramilitary personnel removed him from the protest site.

Videos from the scene showed chaos as security personnel moved onto the stage where Wangchuk was lying. Protesters who attempted to intervene were pushed back.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has started an indefinite hunger strike in Wangchuk’s place. He has said that the planned march to Parliament will continue and has called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign.

The incident has drawn further attention to the protesters’ demands for educational reforms and their growing opposition to the government’s handling of the movement.
