Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett has been appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Oxford, where she will teach contemporary theatre during the 2026/27 academic year.
Blanchett, a two-time Oscar winner, will take up the prestigious role at St Catherine’s College, joining a distinguished list of artists who have previously held the position. The visiting professorship was established in 1990 and has been occupied by renowned figures including Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Meera Syal, and the late Dame Diana Rigg.
Expressing her enthusiasm about the appointment, Blanchett said she is looking forward to engaging with students and fostering creative discussions. She described the opportunity as an “electrifying” chance to participate in direct and meaningful dialogue with emerging thinkers and artists.
Blanchett added that she is excited to begin what she called a “creative rumpus,” highlighting her eagerness to collaborate with the next generation of theatre practitioners and innovators.
Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished actors of her generation, Blanchett has earned international acclaim for her performances in films spanning drama, historical epics, and contemporary cinema. Her move into academia reflects Oxford University’s ongoing commitment to connecting students with leading figures from the performing arts and creative industries.
The appointment is expected to provide students with unique insights into modern theatre, acting, and artistic collaboration, while strengthening the university’s tradition of hosting influential cultural figures.
