Amazon has cut some positions in its artificial general intelligence (AGI) unit as the company continues restructuring efforts while increasing investment in artificial intelligence.

The company confirmed the layoffs on Wednesday but did not reveal how many employees were affected or which specific teams within the AGI organization were impacted.

Amazon’s AGI division focuses on developing advanced AI models and also includes teams working on areas such as semiconductor development and quantum computing research.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company is adjusting its priorities to focus on projects that deliver the greatest value for customers.

“This is a fast-moving space, and we’re sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers,” the company said, adding that some difficult decisions, including eliminating certain roles, were necessary.

Several former employees shared on LinkedIn that teams involved in AI model customization and post-training work were among those affected by the cuts.

The layoffs come as Amazon continues to expand spending on artificial intelligence, following a wider trend across the technology industry where companies are reducing some roles while redirecting resources toward AI development.
