A member of the Alberta Prosperity Project has resigned from the group after using a racial slur during an event focused on a proposed constitution for an independent Alberta.
The incident occurred at an event on Thursday where the group presented a draft document outlining its vision for a separate Alberta.
Member Leaves Group After Racial Slur
The individual reportedly made what attendees described as a racist remark during the event.
The Alberta Prosperity Project later confirmed that the member had resigned from its events following the incident.
The remark drew criticism amid the group’s presentation of its proposed constitutional framework, known as the “Foundation of Freedom.”
Draft Constitution Presented in Airdrie
The event was held in Airdrie and was livestreamed online.
It featured members of the Black Hat Gang, a group based in Medicine Hat that has been credited with contributing to the proposed constitution.
Ian Parkinson was introduced during the event as one of the co-writers of the draft document.
The “Foundation of Freedom” sets out ideas for how an independent Alberta could potentially be governed if the province were to separate from Canada.
Separation Movement Faces Scrutiny
The incident comes as Alberta’s separation movement continues to attract attention and debate.
The Alberta Prosperity Project is behind the “Stay Free Alberta” citizen initiative petition, which has sought to gauge support for Alberta independence.
The group has promoted the idea of Alberta becoming a separate country, while opponents have raised concerns about the political, economic and social implications of separation.
The racist remark has now added another controversy to the group’s activities as it attempts to promote its vision for Alberta’s future.
