FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing one of the biggest leadership challenges of his tenure after a controversial proposal involving the sale of stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms sparked widespread criticism.

Just days earlier, Infantino appeared to be in a strong position as the head of world football. However, reports that the proposal was developed without the knowledge of key stakeholders have raised serious concerns within the sport.

The strongest response has come from UEFA, which has threatened to boycott FIFA competitions—including the FIFA World Cup—if the situation is not addressed.

The warning marks a significant escalation in tensions between European football’s governing body and FIFA, with many viewing it as the most serious challenge to Infantino’s leadership in recent years.

Criticism has also emerged from Concacaf, the confederation that worked closely with FIFA to organize the 2026 World Cup. The organization has called for a full review of FIFA’s leadership following the investment proposal.

Adding to the pressure, several member associations within the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), traditionally seen as supporters of Infantino, have reportedly distanced themselves from the FIFA president.
