A Bruising 24 Hours: What Next for FIFA and Gianni Infantino?

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing one of the biggest challenges of his leadership after a controversial proposal involving private investment in FIFA competitions triggered widespread opposition.

Just days earlier, Infantino appeared firmly in control as the head of world football’s governing body. However, reports that FIFA had explored selling stakes in its competitions to private investment firms—apparently without the involvement of some key stakeholders—have raised serious questions about his leadership.

The strongest response came from UEFA, European football’s governing body and one of Infantino’s biggest critics.

UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if the plans moved forward. The move has increased pressure on Infantino and created what some officials see as a rare opportunity to challenge his position.

However, UEFA is not the only organisation expressing concerns.

Concacaf, the football confederation that worked closely with FIFA during preparations for the 2026 World Cup, has called for a “full review” of FIFA’s leadership following the investment proposal.

The situation became even more damaging for Infantino after some traditionally supportive members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also appeared to distance themselves from the FIFA president.

The growing opposition from multiple football regions has created uncertainty around Infantino’s future and raised wider questions about FIFA’s governance, transparency, and commercial strategy.

While Infantino remains in office, the coming period could prove critical as FIFA attempts to rebuild confidence among its member associations and resolve the divisions created by the proposal.
