A large-scale fire engulfed a major oil depot near the Russian resort city of Sochi following what Russian authorities claim was a Ukrainian drone strike, sparking concerns of escalating cross-border attacks amid the ongoing war.

According to Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev, debris from a downed drone struck a fuel tank at the depot, igniting a fire that prompted the deployment of 127 firefighters to contain the flames. In response, flights at Sochi’s nearby airport were suspended as a safety precaution.

Multiple Drone Strikes Across Southern Russia

Russian officials said the Sochi incident was one of several drone strikes launched by Ukraine over the weekend. Targeted regions included the southern cities of Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh, where the local governor confirmed that four people were injured during one of the attacks.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its air defenses had intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 60 of those intercepted over the Black Sea region. The increasing number of drone strikes suggests a shift in Ukraine’s offensive strategy, targeting energy infrastructure deeper inside Russian territory.

Missile Strike Hits Mykolaiv as Civilian Toll Rises

On the other side of the front line, a Russian missile strike hit Ukraine’s southern city of Mykolaiv, destroying homes and civilian infrastructure. According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, at least seven civilians were injured, including three who are receiving hospital treatment.

Ukraine’s Air Force also reported that Russia launched 83 airborne weapons, including drones and missiles, on Ukrainian territory overnight. Ukrainian defenses successfully shot down 61 of them, but 16 drones and six missiles managed to hit eight different targets across the country.

Aftermath of Kyiv Attack Prompts Calls for Sanctions

The latest attacks follow a particularly brutal week in Ukraine. A deadly assault on Kyiv on Thursday left at least 31 civilians dead, making it one of the most devastating attacks on the capital since the war began in February 2022. Ukrainian officials said more than 300 drones and eight cruise missiles were used in the onslaught.

In the wake of the intensifying violence, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his call for stronger international sanctions against Russia. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the Kremlin’s actions and hinted at new sanctions targeting Moscow’s military and energy sectors.
