Blood tests have revealed very high levels of PFAS chemicals in residents of Bentham, North Yorkshire. Scientists tested 39 people, including local residents and former workers connected to a nearby firefighting foam factory.

The results showed that 23% of those tested fell into the highest health-risk category based on international health guidance. Researchers therefore warned that the findings require urgent attention.

PFAS substances are widely known as “forever chemicals.” These chemicals persist in the environment for decades and accumulate in the human body.

One scientist said the results were “absolutely shocking” compared with expected background levels.

Consequently, the findings raised serious concerns about long-term environmental exposure in the town.

🧪 Tests Reveal Extremely Elevated Chemical Levels

Some blood samples showed exceptionally high PFAS concentrations. The highest recorded level reached 405 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml).

For comparison, scientists in the United States consider 2 ng/ml as a level that may require health monitoring. Meanwhile, experts warn that levels above 20 ng/ml could increase the risk of certain health effects.

Researchers found that most participants had PFAS levels above normal population averages. In addition, about one-third recorded extremely elevated concentrations.

Therefore, scientists believe the contamination likely extends beyond workers and may affect the wider community.

🏭 Firefighting Foam Factory Linked to Chemical Exposure

Investigators connected the contamination to a factory run by Angus Fire, which produced PFAS-based firefighting foam between 1976 and 2024.

Environmental studies previously identified very high PFAS contamination in groundwater near the facility. Researchers believe testing exercises at the factory may have spread chemicals into nearby areas.

During these exercises, foam particles likely traveled through the air and settled into soil, gardens, and surrounding land. As a result, residents may have encountered PFAS through soil contact, air exposure, or locally grown food.

However, the company disputes claims that the blood test results prove abnormal health risks. Company representatives say no global standard currently defines safe PFAS blood levels.

⚠️ Scientists Warn About Long-Term Health Risks

PFAS chemicals remain in the human body for many years. Scientists have linked long-term exposure to several cancers, fertility problems, and immune system effects.

Meanwhile, some Bentham residents reported health concerns, including fertility issues. Researchers therefore recommend continued medical monitoring for individuals with very high PFAS levels.

The findings will also feature in an upcoming television documentary examining PFAS contamination in the UK.

Consequently, the investigation has intensified calls for stronger environmental regulation and better monitoring of industrial chemicals.
