Mumbai: The Indian stock and commodity markets will be closed on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will suspend operations for the day, resulting in a shortened four-day trading week for investors.

Trading will be halted across all market segments including:

  • Equities
  • Equity derivatives
  • Securities lending and borrowing
  • Currency derivatives
  • Electronic gold receipts

Commodity exchanges will also remain shut for the day.

This midweek market break follows the official holiday calendar released by the exchanges earlier this year. Normal trading activities are scheduled to resume on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

About Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, marks the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. The festival falls on the full moon day (Kartik Purnima) and is one of the most significant events in the Sikh calendar.

Celebrations include:

  • Akhand Path – 48-hour continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib
  • Nagar Kirtan – devotional processions with hymns
  • Langar – community meals offered to all, reflecting the values of equality and service

The festival underscores Guru Nanak’s teachings of compassion, humility, equality, and selfless service.
