Rosie O’Donnell has officially left the United States and relocated to Ireland, joining a growing list of celebrities who have moved abroad in recent years.
The former talk-show host and comedian confirmed her international move in a TikTok video posted on March 11, revealing that she now resides in Ireland with her 12-year-old daughter, Dakota.
“Moved here on January 15, and it’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say,” O’Donnell, 62, shared in the video. “The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming. And I’m very grateful.”
Seeking Irish Citizenship
O’Donnell explained that she is in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship due to her family heritage. “I have Irish grandparents, so I’m working on getting my citizenship,” she said.
Although the move was not something she had previously considered, O’Donnell said it felt like the best decision for both her and her daughter.
“Although I was never someone who I thought would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child,” she stated.
Mixed Emotions About Leaving the U.S.
Despite embracing her new home, O’Donnell admitted that she misses aspects of her life in the U.S., particularly her family and friends.
“I miss my other kids. I miss my friends. I miss many things about life there at home,” she shared.
The actress and comedian also hinted that her decision to leave was influenced by social and political issues in the U.S. She suggested that she would only consider returning when equality is ensured for all citizens.
“When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” O’Donnell said.
O’Donnell’s move follows in the footsteps of other high-profile figures, such as filmmaker James Cameron and TV host Ellen DeGeneres, who have also opted to live outside the U.S. in recent years.
For now, O’Donnell is focused on settling into her new life in Ireland, embracing the culture, and establishing a home for her family in what she describes as a “beautiful country.”
