Oxford Hospital Redevelopment Plans Spark Traffic and Pollution Concerns

Plans to redevelop Warneford Park Hospital in Oxford have come under scrutiny over fears the project could worsen traffic congestion and air pollution.

The Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Oxford have submitted proposals to “transform” the hospital site, which include building a new mental health hospital and expanding parking from 360 to 546 spaces.

However, local cycling advocacy group Cyclox has raised concerns that the emphasis on car parking could undermine sustainable transport goals.

“If you provide more car parking, more people will drive,” said Thalia Carr of Cyclox. “And if more people drive, you’re more likely to get congestion, you’ll definitely get pollution, and the air quality will go down. It will also be less attractive for cyclists.”

Carr argued that instead of prioritising car use, the redevelopment should focus on better provisions for cyclists and pedestrians, including easy-access entrances and frequent bus services, to encourage greener and healthier travel options.

The plans are currently under review.
