The 2025 Nepalese pro-monarchy protests were a series of demonstrations advocating for the restoration of the old Kingdom of Nepal. On March 9, 2025, thousands gathered in the capital city, Kathmandu, in favor of restoring the monarchy with former King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah as its head. The crowd attempted to move towards the Parliament House where prohibitory orders were in place. Police intervened, firing tear gas shells at the stage where the convener Nabaraj Subedi and other senior leaders were seated. Subedi was injured, leading to clashes between police and protesters. The protests turned violent, with demonstrators pelting stones and torching houses and vehicles. Several police personnel and protesters were injured. The government imposed a curfew in parts of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, which was lifted the next day. Over a hundred protesters were arrested, and prominent pro-monarchist leaders were detained or placed under house arrest. The protests highlighted a significant political shift in Nepal, with increasing support for the monarchy.
