Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday dismissed speculation about Pakistan contemplating the use of nuclear weapons amid recent tensions with India. He reaffirmed that the country’s nuclear programme is strictly for peaceful purposes and national self-defence, not aggression.

Speaking at a high-level security briefing, Sharif emphasized that Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities are a deterrent, designed to preserve regional stability. “Let me be clear — Pakistan has never advocated the use of nuclear weapons for conflict. Our programme is rooted in peaceful intent and defensive doctrine,” he said.

The statement comes in the wake of heightened regional rhetoric and international concern over the potential escalation between India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed nations.

Sharif also urged global powers to support dialogue over provocation, reiterating that Pakistan remains committed to non-proliferation agreements and transparency regarding its strategic assets.

Diplomatic analysts have welcomed the statement, viewing it as a reaffirmation of Islamabad’s stance on nuclear responsibility and strategic restraint in South Asia.
