A new survey has revealed growing concerns among Ireland’s youth, with many young people considering leaving the country in search of better opportunities. The Growing Up in Ireland survey by the Central Statistics Office highlighted that a significant number of those in their 20s feel uncertain about their future in Ireland and are increasingly thinking about emigration.

Key Findings from the Survey

  • Economic Struggles: About 34% of young people reported difficulty making ends meet, with over one in 20 experiencing significant financial hardship.
  • Housing Concerns: Access to housing emerged as a major issue, with 86% expressing deep concern about the affordability and availability of homes in Ireland.
  • Mental Health Challenges: Mental health remains a critical concern, particularly among young women. Nearly one-third of women (31%) reported being diagnosed with depression or anxiety at some point, compared to 18% of men.

Emigration Trends

The survey also found that one in eight respondents who were contacted to participate had already emigrated, underscoring the extent of the desire among young people to seek better opportunities abroad.

These findings highlight a challenging reality for Ireland’s youth, who are navigating financial struggles, mental health pressures, and a difficult housing market, leading many to question their future prospects in the country.
