A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck the Sagaing region near Mandalay, Myanmar, on Friday, causing widespread damage and shaking neighboring Thailand. The earthquake has raised concerns due to the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.

Why Is Myanmar Prone to Earthquakes?

Myanmar lies on the boundary between the India Plate and the Eurasia Plate, making it one of the most seismically active countries in the world. This boundary runs approximately north to south, cutting through the middle of the country.

According to experts, the plates move past each other horizontally at varying speeds, causing what are known as “strike-slip” earthquakes. Although these types of earthquakes are typically less powerful than those in subduction zones — where one plate slides beneath another — they can still produce quakes with magnitudes between 7 and 8.

Why Was Friday’s Earthquake So Damaging?

The Sagaing region has experienced several earthquakes in recent years. In 2012, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the region resulted in at least 26 deaths and dozens of injuries.

Friday’s quake, however, was significantly more powerful and caused extensive destruction. Its strength and shallow depth likely contributed to the widespread impact felt not only in Myanmar but also in neighboring Thailand.

While large earthquakes have been relatively rare in the Sagaing region, this event highlights the ongoing seismic risks faced by Myanmar due to its geographic position along a tectonic boundary.
