The scandal has rocked the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and raised serious concerns about accountability within the public pension system.

According to Brazil’s Federal Police, the National Social Security Institute (INSS) systematically deducted unauthorized amounts from the pensions of millions of elderly citizens. The fraudulent deductions were allegedly rerouted to various unions and associations, which, in turn, shared the illicit gains with corrupt government officials.
