The European Union and Mexico have sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to impose a 30% tariff on their exports to the United States, a move scheduled to take effect on August 1.

Mexico condemned the tariff plan as an “unfair deal”, stressing that its economic sovereignty is non-negotiable. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU is prepared to take “proportionate countermeasures” if the United States proceeds with the tariffs.

Despite the tough rhetoric, both Mexico and the EU emphasized that they remain open to negotiations to resolve trade tensions diplomatically.

President Trump defended the move, citing trade imbalances and national interest, and warned that further increases beyond 30% could be applied if any retaliation occurs from U.S. trading partners.

In addition to targeting Mexico and the EU, Trump this week also announced new tariffs on imports from Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil, escalating trade friction ahead of key global economic summits.

Global markets responded cautiously, as economists warn the rising tide of protectionism could strain supply chains and impact global growth.
