In one of the greatest moments in women’s cricket history, Jemimah Rodrigues delivered a match-winning masterclass, smashing an unbeaten 127 off 134 balls to guide India to a thrilling five-wicket victory over Australia in the Women’s World Cup semifinal in Navi Mumbai on Thursday (October 30).
Chasing a world-record target of 339, India completed the job with nine balls to spare, storming into Sunday’s final against South Africa (November 2) and snapping Australia’s remarkable 15-match unbeaten run in ODI World Cups.
Rodrigues walked in early with India under pressure at 13/1 and anchored the innings with tremendous composure and shot-making. Smriti Mandhana’s fluent 24 ended controversially after a DRS call showed a spike on UltraEdge despite visible daylight between bat and ball. The dismissal fired up the crowd and the Indian camp, but Rodrigues remained rock-solid.
A crucial 167-run partnership between Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (89 off 88) shifted momentum firmly in India’s favour. Australia’s fielding woes— including dropped catches by Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath — proved costly as India capitalised on every chance.
After Harmanpreet fell against the run of play and Deepti Sharma was run-out following a quick cameo, Richa Ghosh’s aggressive 26 off 16 balls ensured Australia could not tighten control. Rodrigues remained ice-cool throughout, showing little emotion even upon reaching her maiden ODI hundred against Australia. But once the winning runs were scored, she broke down in tears, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the achievement.
Earlier, Australia posted 338, driven by Phoebe Litchfield’s brilliant 119 and an explosive late cameo from Ashleigh Gardner (64*). At one stage, a total beyond 360 looked likely, but disciplined Indian bowling at the death prevented further damage.
India’s historic chase was defined by belief, resilience, and meticulous execution. As the packed crowd roared, Rodrigues etched her name into cricketing folklore, sending India into the World Cup final with momentum and emotion on their side.
India now prepares for a highly-anticipated showdown against South Africa — just one win away from lifting the coveted trophy.
