Air Canada is giving Aeroplan members an extra year before their points face expiration. The airline announced it is extending its temporary pause on Aeroplan points expiry from Nov. 30, 2025, to Nov. 30, 2026.

“This means that, between now and November 29, 2026, any Aeroplan points which would have expired, won’t,” the airline stated on its website. “Effective November 30, 2026, our normal expiration policy will apply, and points will expire if an eligible transaction has not been completed prior to this date.”

In a statement to CTVNews.ca, Air Canada reminded members that accounts can remain active by completing any eligible activity before Nov. 30, 2026, including:

  • Earning points through purchases or Aeroplan partners
  • Redeeming points for flights, hotels or gift cards
  • Donating points to charity
  • Transferring points to another Aeroplan account

Under Aeroplan’s regular policy, points expire if there is no eligible account activity for 18 consecutive months. The expiry pause was first introduced in July 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions made it difficult for members to use their points.

The extension comes ahead of broader Aeroplan changes set for 2026, including a shift to a spending-based model for earning points and status. Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, points will be awarded based on dollars spent rather than distance flown. Elite members will also receive additional points based on their status tier.

A new Status Qualifying Credit (SQC) system will take effect, requiring 25,000 SQC for Aeroplan 25K status, 35,000 SQC for 35K, and so on. Basic economy fares will not qualify for SQC under the revised structure.

With the expiry pause extended and major program updates on the horizon, Aeroplan members now have more time to plan travel and maximize their rewards.
