Finland’s government has announced plans to lift its long-standing ban on hosting nuclear weapons, marking a major shift in the country’s defence policy. The proposed change would amend the 1987 Nuclear Energy Act, which currently prohibits the import, manufacture, possession and detonation of nuclear explosives in Finland.

Officials say the amendment would allow Finland to participate more fully in NATO’s deterrence and defence framework. Meanwhile, the proposal reflects the country’s evolving security strategy after joining the NATO alliance in 2023.

Consequently, the government plans to submit the proposal to parliament, where the ruling coalition currently holds a majority.
