Hungarian Farmers Face Tough Choices as Drought Ravages Crops

LADANYBENE, Hungary, Aug 1 (Reuters) – A worsening drought in southern Hungary is pushing local farmers to a breaking point, as climate change steadily depletes water resources and slashes crop yields. Some are now contemplating abandoning the region entirely or seeking work outside agriculture.

This once-thriving agricultural zone—spanning the flatlands between the Tisza and Danube rivers—has long produced essential crops like corn, grain, and sunflower seed. But as temperatures rise and rainfall becomes increasingly unreliable, the land is losing its ability to sustain farming.

Scientists warn that the region is rapidly approaching a tipping point. Groundwater levels are falling, and the lack of sufficient irrigation solutions is accelerating the crisis. With each passing year, harvests are becoming more unpredictable and less profitable.

Many farmers, especially smallholders, say they can no longer rely on the seasons. “We used to have patterns. Now there’s chaos,” one local grower shared.

While some are considering relocation, others are exploring government support schemes or alternative sources of income. The situation highlights broader challenges faced by agriculture across Europe, where climate volatility is forcing communities to rethink traditional ways of life.
