The Dance Theatre of Harlem, founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell in response to Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, has experienced a dynamic journey marked by success, challenges, and revival. After ceasing operations in 2004, the company was revived in 2012 by Virginia Johnson, a former ballerina and company member, who restored stability before passing the leadership to Robert Garland, another longtime member and choreographer. This year’s season at City Center, running from April 10–13, features a diverse repertoire: William Forsythe’s renowned piece “The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude,” George Balanchine’s “Donizetti Variations,” and a new work by Garland titled “The Cookout,” which blends classical ballet with funk and neo-soul music. This lineup reflects the company’s commitment to honoring its rich history while embracing contemporary influences, continuing to inspire audiences with its innovative performances.
