A man who posed as a police officer and detained a woman after asking questions about her immigration status has been charged with kidnapping, say Peel police.

A woman was confronted by a man posing as a law enforcement official near Bovaird Drive and Airport Road in Brampton on Feb. 25.

During that discussion, police say the suspect inquired about the victim’s immigration status, demanded appropriate documentation and threatened to arrest her.

The victim was then escorted to her home to gather documentation, where police say the suspect told her family that she would need to go to the police station and money would be required for her release.

When the suspect left the home with the victim, the family contacted police. A short time later, both were located, and the victim was in good health, according to the police.
