Saturday Night Live is expanding across the pond! The iconic sketch comedy show, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, announced on Thursday that it will be launching a British version. Produced in collaboration with Sky Studios, Saturday Night Live UK will feature a British cast of comedians — to be revealed soon — and maintain the same format that has made the U.S. version a global hit, including famous guest hosts and musical performances.

Lorne Michaels, the creator of SNL, will serve as executive producer for the U.K. adaptation while continuing in the same role for the original U.S. version on NBC.

“For over 50 years, Saturday Night Live has occupied a unique place in television and culture, shaping global conversations through its sharp comedic insight, all under Lorne Michaels’ masterful direction,” said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios. “We’re excited to team up with Lorne and the SNL team to bring an all-British version of the show to U.K. audiences, live from London on Saturday nights starting next year.”

The U.K. version will retain the essence of the original show, with a mix of political satire, offbeat sketches, fake commercials, musical parodies, and the signature Weekend Update segment. SNL has been a launching pad for the careers of many comedic legends, including John Belushi, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon.

While SNL has attempted to launch international versions in countries like France, Japan, and Italy — many of which were short-lived — the show continues to run successfully in South Korea.

Its mix of political satire, offbeat skits, fake commercials, comic music videos and its regular Weekend Update spoof on the news has launched the careers of many comedians and actors.

Its roster of famous cast members include the late John Belushi, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Kenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon.

Efforts to launch SNL in other countries, such as France, Japan and Italy, have typically been short-lived, though a version of the show remains on the air in South Korea.
