At least 37 people have been killed and almost 400 evacuated after a Russian drone strike hit a weapons depot near a residential area on the outskirts of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.

The strike occurred late on Friday and caused stored shells, mines and drones to detonate, triggering a powerful explosion that damaged surrounding properties. A care home for elderly and disabled people was among the buildings affected.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the weapons storage facility should not have been located so close to residential areas. He announced an investigation into what he described as serious negligence involving the storage of explosive materials near civilians.

Regional head Tymur Tkachenko said at least 42 people were injured in the explosion, including four children. Rescue operations continued on Saturday in the Bucha district as emergency teams searched the affected area.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said its forces had targeted an ammunition depot in Myla, a village west of the Ukrainian capital. According to the ministry, the facility contained components and launch boosters for FP-1 and FP-2 long-range drones.

The resulting explosions caused extensive damage across the village, with around 130 homes reportedly affected.

The incident is the second strike on a munitions depot near Kyiv in recent months, renewing concerns over the location and security of military storage facilities close to civilian communities.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage while investigating the circumstances surrounding the storage of weapons at the site.
