Volunteers in Stoke-on-Trent are taking on the ambitious task of restoring a historic observatory and bringing it back to life for the local community.
The Newchapel Observatory, built in the 1960s by four amateur astronomers, was once considered a groundbreaking centre for astronomy and science education.
A Revolutionary Observatory
When it was established, Newchapel Observatory featured an observatory, planetarium and specially designed domes.
It also housed specialist telescopes designed for observing the Sun and included a natural science education centre.
The facility was created by amateur astronomers who wanted to share their passion for science and astronomy with people in the local area.
Observatory Fell Into Disrepair
The centre gradually fell into disrepair after the death of one of its founders, Michael Pace, in 2010.
Pace had established the centre with his brother Tony and dedicated much of his time to developing the facility and encouraging local interest in astronomy.
Now, the Friends of Newchapel Observatory are working to restore the site and eventually reopen it to the public.
Plans for a New Dome and Telescope
The restoration project is expected to involve significant construction and repair work.
Volunteers are planning to:
- Build a new observatory dome
- Install a new telescope
- Repair parts of the existing building
- Construct a new floor
- Restore the facility for community use
The group hopes the work will eventually allow the observatory to once again become a place where people can explore astronomy and science.
Built With Ingenuity
Miles Palmer, director of the Friends of Newchapel Observatory, said the original astronomers had created something remarkable despite having limited resources.
He explained that they “used scrap material and their ingenuity” to build what became an impressive telescope.
The project is therefore not simply about repairing an old building. Volunteers also want to preserve the story of the amateur astronomers who created the observatory and their commitment to making science accessible to the public.
A New Future for Newchapel Observatory
The restoration will be a major undertaking, but supporters hope the observatory can once again become an important community resource.
If the plans are successful, a new generation could have the opportunity to look through its telescopes, learn about the night sky and experience the same fascination with astronomy that inspired its original founders decades ago.
