Arsenal begin the new Premier League campaign as defending champions after ending their long wait for another league title last season.
Mikel Arteta’s side are among the favourites to lift the trophy again, but history suggests that successfully defending a Premier League title is far from easy.
Why Defending the Title Is So Difficult
Winning the Premier League requires an entire season of consistency, but repeating that achievement can present an entirely different challenge.
Players who have spent months chasing the title must quickly recover from the emotional high of winning it and then prepare to do the same thing all over again.
There is also greater pressure on the defending champions, with opponents particularly motivated to beat them.
The psychological challenge has proved difficult for several previous champions.
Guardiola Changed the Pattern
Manchester City made defending the Premier League title appear relatively straightforward under Pep Guardiola.
After winning the league for the first time under Guardiola in 2017-18, City successfully defended their title on multiple occasions.
Before Guardiola’s arrival, however, consecutive Premier League titles were much less common.
The championship changed hands in each of the eight seasons before Guardiola’s first Premier League triumph.
Only Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Jose Mourinho at Chelsea had previously managed successful title defences during the Premier League era.
Leicester Provide a Warning
One of the clearest examples of how difficult defending a title can be is Leicester City.
After their remarkable Premier League triumph in 2015-16, Leicester struggled during the following campaign and came dangerously close to the relegation battle.
The contrast between the two seasons demonstrated the enormous mental and physical challenge involved in repeating a historic achievement.
Arsenal Face Strong Competition
Arsenal will also have to contend with intense competition from the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.
Former Premier League winger Andros Townsend believes the pressure of defending the championship could make it difficult for Arsenal to reproduce their previous campaign.
Liverpool’s recent title wins provide another example. After winning the Premier League, they subsequently finished third and fifth in the following seasons.
Can Arteta’s Arsenal Make History?
Arsenal have already demonstrated that they have the quality required to win the Premier League.
The bigger question is whether Arteta can maintain the team’s hunger and consistency now that they are the side everyone wants to beat.
The Gunners will enter the season as favourites, but the history of the Premier League suggests that winning consecutive titles requires more than talent.
Arsenal must combine squad depth, consistency and the same competitive mentality that helped them become champions in the first place.
If they can do that, Arteta’s side have a genuine opportunity to establish themselves as the dominant force in English football.
