A Ukrainian paramedic has described the terrifying moment she was chased by a Russian drone while trying to provide emergency medical assistance in the southern city of Kherson.
Inna Lytvynenko said she was responding to a call to treat a woman injured in a Russian drone attack when an FPV drone struck her ambulance.
The incident left her facing another immediate threat as a second drone began following her.
Paramedic Forced to Run From Drone
Lytvynenko said she was wearing bright orange body armour when she arrived at the scene.
After the first drone hit the ambulance, she heard the distinctive buzzing of another drone approaching.
Realising that she was being targeted, she grabbed her trauma bag and ran.
She said she panicked because she believed stopping could cost her life.
The drone followed her for around 10 minutes before eventually leaving the area. Police then arrived and took her to safety.
More Vehicles Attacked
The danger did not end there.
Lytvynenko said two additional vehicles that arrived to transport the injured woman to hospital were also hit by drones.
It took several hours before another police vehicle was able to reach the area and safely evacuate her.
She described the attacks as a form of “safari hunting”, referring to what she believes are deliberate attempts to track and attack people from the air.
Growing Concern Over Drone Attacks
Drone warfare has become a major feature of Russia’s war in Ukraine, with both sides using unmanned aircraft extensively.
However, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilians and emergency responders with drones, particularly in areas close to the front line.
Such attacks can make it increasingly difficult for paramedics, police officers and other emergency workers to reach people who have already been injured.
Zelensky Calls for More Pressure on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for greater international pressure on Russia following another reported “safari” attack earlier in the week.
Zelensky said efforts should be increased to stop what Ukraine describes as deliberate attacks against civilians.
For emergency workers such as Lytvynenko, the attacks have transformed routine rescue missions into potentially life-threatening operations, with medics themselves increasingly forced to become targets of the conflict.
