Fifa president Gianni Infantino has strongly denied allegations that Uefa made a six-figure payment to a woman who reportedly had an alleged relationship with him during his time at European football’s governing body.

Infantino was Uefa’s general secretary between 2009 and 2016 before becoming Fifa president.

A spokesman for Infantino told The Telegraph that he “strongly denies” the allegations and described them as categorically untrue.

Uefa Confirms Payment Was Made

Uefa confirmed that a payment was made to the woman in question but rejected suggestions that it was an improper arrangement.

The organisation said the payment covered fees for the woman to complete an MBA course at a local business school.

Uefa said the payment complied with the regulations that were in place at the time.

However, the organisation acknowledged that its rules have since been strengthened and now reflect standards expected of a modern, high-profile organisation.

Infantino Rejects Allegations of Misconduct

A Fifa spokesman said there had never been a complaint from an employee at either Uefa or Fifa concerning Infantino’s behaviour.

The spokesman also said any suggestion that Infantino had engaged in inappropriate conduct or breached regulations was defamatory.

BBC Sport has contacted both Fifa and Infantino for comment.

Allegations Come During Fifa Leadership Crisis

The claims emerge at a difficult time for Infantino, who is already facing pressure over his leadership of Fifa following his controversial proposal to sell stakes in World Cup competitions to private investors.

The plan was eventually abandoned after widespread opposition from Uefa and other football governing bodies.

Infantino’s future as Fifa president has therefore come under increased scrutiny, with the latest allegations adding another layer of controversy around his leadership.
