Google has temporarily removed a new artificial intelligence feature from Google Earth after concerns were raised about its potential to create misleading images and spread misinformation.

The feature, which integrated Google’s Nano Banana 2 AI image generator, allowed users to create fictional scenes using real satellite, aerial, or 3D imagery as a base. These AI-generated images could then be downloaded and shared online.

The company paused the feature less than 48 hours after its announcement following a BBC Verify investigation in which experts warned that the tool could be abused to create realistic-looking fake scenarios with the appearance of Google’s credibility.

In a statement, Google said it had seen “people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies” and confirmed that the feature was being paused while stronger safeguards were developed.

The company acknowledged that users place a high level of trust in Google Earth as a reliable representation of the real world, making accuracy and authenticity especially important.

During testing, BBC Verify was able to generate fictional images showing events such as a collapsed Eiffel Tower, a sinkhole near the Great Pyramid of Giza, and military vehicles in Kyiv—despite none of these scenarios being real.

Experts warned that malicious actors could potentially use such tools to create convincing fake visuals for propaganda, scams, or misleading online content.

Google said it plans to introduce stronger protections before considering whether to make the feature available again.
