The village of Clinton, British Columbia, remains largely intact after firefighters battled the advancing Pear Lake wildfire overnight, although some structures were destroyed.

Brian Doddridge, a member of the village’s emergency operations centre, said the vast majority of Clinton’s residential area survived as flames reached the outskirts of the community late Friday.

Officials believe several structures were lost, but damage assessments are still underway. Authorities will notify affected property owners once inspections are complete.

The wildfire response continued on Saturday as emergency crews worked to keep the flames from spreading further into the community.

Residents were ordered to evacuate on Friday as the wildfire rapidly approached the village.

Doddridge said he and a small group of village staff initially stayed behind to help coordinate the evacuation before leaving around 5 p.m. as the fire drew closer.

Emergency officials continue to monitor the situation while firefighting efforts remain focused on protecting homes and containing the wildfire.
