A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico on Friday, sending tremors across parts of Guatemala and El Salvador.

The earthquake was centred off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico’s southernmost state, and caused buildings to shake in neighbouring countries.

Despite the strength of the earthquake, authorities said there were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries, or significant damage.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said emergency protocols were activated following the earthquake. Officials in Chiapas and the neighbouring state of Tabasco reported no major problems.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo also said there had been no reports of deaths.

Authorities in the affected areas continued monitoring the situation following the powerful earthquake.
