US President Donald Trump has joined the criticism of England’s tactics following their 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina.

Trump questioned why England captain Harry Kane appeared to take on a more defensive role during the second half as Argentina completed a dramatic comeback.

England had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon, but manager Thomas Tuchel later switched to a more defensive approach, including moving to a back five and making several defensive-minded substitutions.

Argentina scored twice late in the match to secure a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

Several pundits and supporters have criticised Tuchel’s decisions, while reports suggested some England players were also unhappy with the instructions they received after taking the lead.

Trump said Kane was an excellent player and questioned the decision to use him defensively instead of keeping England focused on attacking.

He also acknowledged that he was not a football coach, but described the tactical decision as unusual.
