Quebec’s population is projected to undergo significant changes over the next 25 years, but growth will not be evenly distributed across the province, according to new projections released by the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ).
The report suggests that while several regions are expected to continue attracting new residents and experience steady population growth, others may face slower growth or even population decline if current demographic trends continue.
Montreal is among the areas that could see its population decrease over the coming decades, reflecting broader changes in migration patterns, aging demographics, and birth rates.
The ISQ projections highlight that population shifts will vary considerably from one region to another, creating different economic and social challenges for local communities and policymakers.
Officials say the findings can help governments and municipalities plan for future needs, including housing, healthcare, transportation, education, and public services, as Quebec’s demographic landscape continues to evolve.
