At least 15 people have died after a speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island in southern Vietnam, according to local authorities.
The boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned in rough sea conditions on Saturday, around 400 metres from the island. Authorities believe the rough weather played a significant role in the accident, although an official investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.
Several tourist boats operating nearby rushed to the scene and joined the rescue operation. Many passengers were reportedly trapped inside the overturned vessel before rescuers managed to pull survivors to safety.
Officials confirmed that 21 people were rescued. Local media reports suggest that all of the victims may be Indian citizens, though authorities have not yet released the official identities of those who lost their lives.
Hon May Rut Ngoai, located in the An Thoi Archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand, is a popular destination for island-hopping tours and attracts thousands of visitors every year because of its scenic beaches and clear waters.
Vietnamese authorities have launched an investigation into the incident while rescue teams continue their efforts and officials work to support the families of those affected.
