A long-serving firefighter from Dorset has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours list after dedicating nearly five decades to public service.
Keith Prince, 67, of Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his outstanding contribution to firefighting and his local community.
Prince, who has served as a firefighter for 48 years, said he was “taken aback” when he learned he would receive the honour. He described the recognition as both unexpected and deeply appreciated.
The King’s Birthday Honours celebrate individuals from across the United Kingdom who have made significant contributions through public service, community work, charity efforts, and professional achievements.
Speaking about the award, Prince expressed pride in having served his community for so many years and said he felt honoured to be included among this year’s recipients.
People across southern England who were recognised in the honours list shared similar feelings of gratitude, pride, and humility at receiving national recognition for their work.
Prince’s award highlights the dedication of emergency service workers who spend decades helping and protecting their communities, often without seeking public recognition.
The British Empire Medal is awarded to individuals who have made a significant impact through their service and commitment, and Prince’s nearly half-century career reflects that spirit of dedication and public duty.
