Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has temporarily disabled access to its newly released Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models after receiving a U.S. government export control directive citing national security concerns.
According to the company, the order was received on Friday and instructed Anthropic to suspend access to the models for all foreign nationals, regardless of whether they were located inside or outside the United States. The directive also applied to foreign-national employees working within the company.
To ensure immediate compliance, Anthropic disabled access to both models for all customers. The company clarified that its other AI systems remain available and are not affected by the government order.
The decision comes only days after Anthropic introduced Fable 5 and Mythos 5, which were promoted as some of the company’s most advanced artificial intelligence models. Fable 5 was particularly notable because it represented one of Anthropic’s most powerful public releases, incorporating new safeguards designed to restrict responses in high-risk areas.
The launch followed the introduction of Claude Mythos Preview, an experimental model that gained significant attention from both government agencies and industry leaders for its advanced cybersecurity capabilities. Anthropic had previously limited access to that technology through a specialized cybersecurity initiative known as Project Glasswing.
In its statement, Anthropic said government officials did not provide detailed information regarding the specific national security concerns that prompted the directive. The company expressed frustration with the process while acknowledging its obligation to comply with federal requirements.
Anthropic stated that while governments should have mechanisms to prevent potentially unsafe AI deployments, such actions should be transparent, technically justified, and based on clearly defined procedures. The company suggested that the current directive did not meet those standards.
The move represents another chapter in Anthropic’s ongoing interactions with U.S. regulators and government agencies. Earlier this year, the company was involved in a public dispute with the Department of Defense over AI-related issues.
The sudden suspension has created uncertainty among customers and industry observers, particularly given the significance of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 in Anthropic’s product roadmap. Many experts view the decision as another sign of increasing government scrutiny over advanced artificial intelligence technologies and their potential national security implications.
For now, Anthropic has not indicated when access to the affected models might be restored, leaving users awaiting further clarification from both the company and U.S. authorities.
