The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially got underway in the United States with a spectacular opening ceremony in Los Angeles, featuring performances from some of the biggest names in global music.
Marking the first men’s World Cup hosted on U.S. soil since 1994, the event brought together sports fans and music lovers for a vibrant celebration ahead of the host nation’s opening match against Paraguay.
Pop superstar Katy Perry headlined the ceremony, taking the stage shortly before the teams entered the field. She was joined by rapper Future and several internationally recognized artists, creating an energetic atmosphere that reflected the global nature of the tournament.
Among the performers were Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla, Brazilian star Anitta, and LISA from the K-pop sensation Blackpink, highlighting the diverse cultural representation at the tournament’s opening festivities.
The 2026 World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and is set to become the largest edition in the competition’s history, featuring 48 national teams.
Canada also celebrated the start of the tournament with its own opening event in Toronto, where renowned Canadian musicians Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé performed for fans. Meanwhile, Mexico City’s opening celebrations featured global music stars Shakira and Nigerian singer Burna Boy.
Thousands of supporters gathered around the Los Angeles Coliseum before the match, many dressed in patriotic and iconic American-themed costumes. Fans embraced the festive atmosphere as excitement continued to build around the tournament.
One supporter, Tommy Paun, who attended dressed as Elvis Presley, described Los Angeles as a city that reflects diversity and different communities, making it a fitting host for a global sporting event.
The opening ceremonies across the three host nations showcased music, culture and international unity as the month-long tournament officially began. With 48 teams competing for football’s biggest prize, organizers expect the 2026 World Cup to be the most watched and widely attended edition in the competition’s history.
