An Ontario appeals court has dismissed an appeal filed by former fashion executive Peter Nygard, upholding both his sexual assault convictions and his prison sentence.
Nygard, 84, was convicted in 2023 on four counts of sexual assault following a high-profile criminal trial in Toronto. He was later sentenced to 11 years in prison, with credit for time already spent in custody reducing the remaining period he is expected to serve.
The case involved allegations spanning from the 1980s through the mid-2000s. Several women accused Nygard of sexually assaulting them at his company headquarters in Toronto, including one complainant who was reportedly 16 years old at the time of the alleged offence.
Ontario’s highest court reviewed Nygard’s challenge to both the convictions and sentence but ultimately ruled against him, leaving the original verdicts and prison term unchanged.
The former fashion mogul once led a major international clothing business but has faced multiple criminal and civil allegations in several countries in recent years. The Toronto case became one of the most closely watched legal proceedings involving the disgraced businessman.
Prosecutors argued during trial that Nygard used his position of power and influence to target women over a prolonged period. Defense lawyers had denied the allegations and challenged the credibility of witnesses throughout the proceedings.
The appeal decision marks another significant legal setback for Nygard, who continues to face additional legal scrutiny internationally.
The court’s ruling reinforces the original findings that led to his conviction and confirms that his prison sentence will remain in effect.
