Shreyas Iyer, captain of the Punjab Kings, said his team focuses on impressing each other rather than outsiders. He made the remarks after Punjab secured their second consecutive win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
The team climbed to the top of the IPL standings after chasing down a 210-run target against Chennai Super Kings with eight balls to spare.
“We are going to play a brand of cricket… to impress each other,” Iyer said.
📊 Strong Batting Performance Drives Victory
Punjab’s top order delivered an aggressive performance during the chase. Iyer led from the front with a 50 off 29 balls, setting the tone for the innings.
Meanwhile, opener Priyansh Arya provided a fast start with 39 runs off just 11 deliveries. The batting unit maintained pressure throughout the innings.
As a result, Punjab completed one of the most successful chases of the season. The victory also marked their ninth successful chase of a 200-plus target, the highest among IPL teams.
🔥 Internal Competition Boosting Confidence
Iyer said the team’s success comes from internal competition and clarity of approach. Players challenge each other within the dressing room rather than seeking outside validation.
He added that early participation from multiple players has improved confidence. Therefore, players feel better prepared to handle pressure situations during matches.
At the same time, the team’s early momentum reflects strong coordination across batting and overall strategy. Consequently, Punjab has emerged as an early contender in the tournament.
⚠️ Slow Over-Rate Remains Concern
Despite the win, Iyer acknowledged a key issue. The team was fined for a slow over-rate for the second consecutive match. He said the team must address this problem quickly. Therefore, improving match discipline remains a priority moving forward.
The captain explained that penalties can impact gameplay, especially in the final overs. As a result, the team is focusing on correcting this area.
🌍 Punjab’s Strong Start to IPL 2026
Punjab Kings have started the season strongly with back-to-back wins. Their aggressive batting and team coordination have helped them dominate early matches.
Meanwhile, the team’s approach highlights a shift in mindset. Instead of focusing on external expectations, players are concentrating on internal performance standards.
As a result, the squad has shown consistency and confidence. Therefore, their early success reflects both skill and team cohesion.
📈 Focus on Consistency Moving Forward
Iyer emphasised that maintaining this mindset will be key for the rest of the tournament. The team aims to build on its early momentum.
Meanwhile, IPL 2026 remains competitive, with multiple strong teams in contention. Therefore, consistency will determine long-term success.
As a result, Punjab Kings will look to continue their form while addressing minor weaknesses. Their performance in upcoming matches will be closely watched.
