Researchers from Curtin University have identified a health tipping point linked to video gaming duration, according to a study published on 16 January 2026 in the journal Nutrition. The findings suggest that health outcomes begin to shift once weekly gaming exceeds 10 hours.

The research team surveyed 317 university students from five Australian universities. Participants reported weekly gaming hours, diet quality, sleep patterns, and body weight. Based on gaming time, researchers grouped participants into low, moderate, and high gaming categories.

The study found clear differences once gaming time passed the 10-hour mark. Meanwhile, students who played fewer than 10 hours per week showed similar health outcomes across all measured areas.

However, students who gamed more than 10 hours per week showed less favourable results across several indicators:

  • Lower overall diet quality
  • Greater sleep disruption
  • Higher median body mass index (BMI)
  • Later bedtimes and irregular sleep schedules

Researchers said these patterns suggest that extended gaming time may replace routines that support healthy eating and consistent sleep.

🍽️ Diet, Sleep and Weight Findings

The study reported that high-intensity gamers recorded a median BMI of 26.3 kg/m², compared with 22.2 kg/m² among low gamers and 22.8 kg/m² among moderate gamers. Although the researchers observed this association, they stressed that the findings do not prove gaming alone caused weight gain.

Sleep quality appeared poor across all groups. However, heavy gamers reported more severe disruption, including shorter sleep duration and less restorative rest. As a result, researchers linked extended gaming sessions with delayed sleep routines.

“Our findings suggest that moderate gaming does not appear harmful, but excessive gaming may displace time needed for sleep, nutrition and other healthy behaviours,” said Professor Mario Siervo from Curtin University.

🧠 Balance Matters More Than Elimination

The researchers emphasised that gaming itself is not inherently harmful. Instead, they highlighted the importance of balance. Students who kept gaming below 10 hours per week did not show the same negative health patterns.

“The results highlight the importance of moderation rather than abstinence,” Siervo said.

The study noted that university years often shape long-term lifestyle habits. Therefore, identifying behavioural thresholds early may help young adults maintain healthier routines.
